Extrusion is a process used to product plastic. An extrusion machine may use single-screw extruders or double-screw extruders to shape plastic. Single-screw extruder have two main mechanical components: the barrel and screw. Before being used in manufacturing applications, extruder barrels are surface hardened with a depth of .5mm to obtain barrel hardness of approx. 1000HV. These barrels are made from stainless steel, powder metallurgy steels or bi-metals. Beside its construction material and features, barrels can also be classified by their internal and external characteristics. In terms of external surface characteristics, they can be smooth or machined. There are many pros and cons of using smooth barrels that are not machined or coated. In this type of barrel, the heat resistors are placed in such a way to allow cooling only through special fans, which means average cooling capacity. Machined barrels are finned from a solid steel cylinder, allowing them to be machine tool processed. As compared to a smooth barrel, a machined barrel is much better at heat dispersion. Apart from that, smooth barrels also have a low melt output than machined barrels. These barrels can be used in almost all types of plastic extrusion machines including extruder machineries, PVC recycling plants, plastic extrusion plants, PVC film making extrusion machineries, etc.
