What is a giant pumpkin?
A giant pumpkin is any butternut squash that weighs more than 1,000 pounds (approx. 450 Kg). How are the seed pods formed?
As the plant dies back after flowering many flowers will change to a tan color and dry up. They look dead but they’re not. Each of these dried-up dead-looking flowers becomes a place where new seeds will form as long as there is cross-pollination with another pumpkin plant nearby. Each flower that has been pollinated successfully will become a seed pod that will turn brown in color.
Look for pumpkin vines with completely browned out dying areas indicating several healthy-looking seeds inside each pod! It takes about five to seven days from pollination for the pods to start turning brown. Ripe seed pods will turn completely brown all the way around where it attaches to the vine, and ripe seeds inside can be easily shaken out by hand.
